Sharing your story with social media stories

Storytelling isn’t new, but using social media platforms to engage virtual friends and fans through “Stories” is. This latest feature on Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat gives your organization a new tool. The idea is that you post a video or image and in the next 24 hours or shorter (depending on the platform) it will disappear.

Stories help you to connect with your audience and give you a platform to draw them to your services and products in a more relaxed atmosphere. However, just like everything that you produce for social media and traditional media, there must be a strategy behind it.

How do you elevate your brand using Stories?

Here are a few tips for social stories marketing to get started:

Tell a story

Sharing a story isn’t a new concept, but now there is a way to make it interactive. First, you have to have a message and share it in an authentic way. Keep the content simple and the dialogue light-hearted and fun. After all, Stories should have a good narrative that keeps your audience engaged.

Provide a benefit

When someone chooses to follow your brand through social media, they are hoping that your products or services will either make life easier or, at the very least, entertain them. If you stick to your strategy and share consistently through traditional posts and stories, you will see your audience grow and share your brand with others.

Be creative

This concept may seem pretty basic, but it takes time to be creative. You can’t just schedule a time for inspiration to strike. That is where your marketing strategy comes back into play—a balance needs to be achieved. Of course, don’t forget to have fun with some of the built-in features like filters and stickers.

Plan

As with everything, you need to plan ahead and make sure that your plan engages your audience and achieves your objectives. Depending on the platform, you may run into a few issues with Stories and when images were taken (some platforms require that they were in the last 24 hours). An easy way to get around that is to edit the photos immediately prior to posting so it shows as a “new” image in the application.

Always have a call-to-action

This seems basic, but all too often brands forget to tell their audience what to do next. It is great to share a story, but don’t waste your time and efforts by losing your leads. Make sure you ask your audience to like, share, comment, purchase, etc.
