As someone who’s been on a diet off-and-on most of my life, empty calories are the worst. Nothing can set a hungry person off more than craving something you know isn’t “good” for you because it’s nothing but sugar, fat or alcohol. It exists, you want it, you have it, you get nothing positive from it whatsoever, you regret it. Why would you put yourself through this cycle time and time again?
Because it’s quick, easy and typically tasty.
I can’t advise you what to do as far as eating fast food or Hostess snacks, but one thing I can speak to with 100 percent certainty is marketing. So many times you scroll past pages full of empty calorie marketing campaigns, cookie cutter images with bland topics. This doesn’t mean everything you post is going to be a winner, but make it worth the calories—er, I mean, the effort.
Brand not bland
I’ve talked in the past about creating your own voice within your marketing strategy, and I stand by the importance of this wholeheartedly. It has been proven time and time again that brands with a consistent voice and message have more loyalty, ROI and success because of the trust they consistently earn from current, past and future customers.
Speak in that voice with each social post, blog, radio spot and beyond. No one knows your business better than you and, even if you outsource your marketing to a team, it’s important to show them your voice and message right away as they are an extension of yourself.
Stay away from clichés
Your business or organization is interesting. It’s one of a kind (even if you’re a franchise or chain). It’s successful and strong. Don’t sully that by resorting to cliché marketing. With that said, I know not every post or blog is a home run and some are more obligatory like holiday posts and changed office hours. It’s the rest of the content I’m referring to—educating, promoting, entertaining.
You can find copy and paste phrases all over the internet, and though they make sense and sound good, avoid them. Come up with your own content, man!
What is your company motto?
What is something you say about the office all the time that inspires your team?
What do you believe in?
Showering your followers with phrases like, “Think outside the box,” “It’s all about great storytelling” and “We want to do something impactful” doesn’t tell them anything about anything, really.
Whew… I got a little heated there, but with so many different types of media today, there’s no reason for empty calorie marketing like that.
I’m calm now; let’s move forward to my final point.
You’re a human, Harry!
Though we aren’t wizards (that we know of), we are humans. Every day I drive from Perryville to Cape Girardeau to work at Rooted Web, an office full of other humans with different life experiences than me in a town full of different people than those I live around. At the office, we all work toward the same goals, and some of us even do the same type of job, but we are nothing alike.
You started a company because you saw a need or an opportunity. You had an idea and decided to leap. You hired other humans to work for you because you grew this idea. Your followers and customers aren’t the only one who deserve to see the very best from your company, you do too. You deserve calories worth something.
If you don’t know where to start, that’s OK. Our dedicated marketing team does, and we’re so excited to start working with you. Let’s chat!
